Abide with me

Abide with me is a Christian hymn. It is written by Henry Francis Lyte. It is written on 1947. Henry Francis Lyte was dying while he created his unforgettable creation. He died of tuberculosis three weeks after the completion of this hymn.



This hymn is for praying God. Through this hymn it is expected that God remains present with the speaker throughout the life. It becomes possible through trials and death. Every verse of this hymn became so popular.



This hymn got popularity across the world. It took fancy of many famous personalities like Mahatma Gandhi and King George V. It was presented in the weddings of King George VI and of his daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth II. It is also presented during various Christian funerals.

The hymn’s popularity spread over the globe. In various country, it is presented during some important celebration like annual Anzac Day services in Australia and New Zealand, and Remembrance Day services in Canada and the United Kingdom.

It is also sung on 29 January by the combined bands of the Indian Defence Forces during the annual Beating Retreat ceremony. Mosses Hogan did the choral version of this hymn.

First verse of this hymn is also taking place at the FA Cup Final since 1957. It takes place just before the kick off the match at around 2.45pm BST.

It has shown its presence in various films like Shane , Fist of Fury, 28 Days Later, Latter Days etc. Various television series like Carnivàle (2nd Season), Lost , Touched by an Angel etc. even took this hymn.
